The day after the World Cup

IMG_0150

South Africans woke up with huge hangover today. The party was huge, lasted for a month and hundreds of thousands people came form all over the world. Everyone had good time but now it is time for South Africans to farewell guests and start to clean the house.

Africans proved to all doomsayers that they were wrong. World Cup was organized on professional level, games took place, crime rate nose down, and not many fans will leave South Africa disappointed. Economically World Cup was almost breaking even which is fantastic result when we think about global crisis, and far distance from South Africa to the rest of the world. And last but not least all invested money in infrastructure and security will stay here. Another priceless asset is the image of South Africa and marketing the country had for last month.  So, why people are sad here?

“I will miss these games everyday, checking results but the most all those fans. All of them so nice, friendly and leave so much money” told me Wendy waitress in local coffee. “It is so sad around without that buzz”, she adds.

Wendy is right most of fans rushed to the airports early in the morning, the rest cure hangover or like me flu caught on freezing stadiums.

In pharmacy queue I meet Loraine, educated black lady, who partly lives in reach Houton area partly in London. “I couldn’t miss this party, so I came especially from London, had to quit my job” she smiles. “It was nice all of this, especially that many people here for the first time in their life could feel this country can be nice, and safe – you know normal!” – Loraine stress. “But I am not sure if all of that will stay here after the World Cup”.

After living 6 years in the monument shadow of the World Cup South Africa have to learn to live as “normal” country. Today’s newspapers published cartoons with Zakumi, World Cup cheetah mascot waiting for the job with other unskilled workers on the street corner.

South Africa, the party is over, time to get back to job.

To get to the Soccer City stadium is not easy even when it is not hosting World Cup final. Yesterday the biggest fans started to arrive at dawn. Many of them clutched cardboard signs, indicating what they are ready to trade for a ticket to the final – one man from England even offered his son, who was lingering nearby, nervously.

I came a few hours before the closing of entrance, and already a quarter of the stadium was full.

“You can miss many things in life, but not the World Cup final,” says Roberto, a fan who came from Spain. Roberto said that he made the spontaneous decision to come to Africa –  he bought tickets on Thursday morning, and Friday he landed in Johannesburg. When I asked if it was difficult to buy a ticket at that late hour, he blushes and says, “Actually it was gift from my father… I am very nervous (for Spain)!,” he added

His Dutch counterpart had similar sentiments: Peter from Arnhem said, “I have butterflies in my stomach! But I want the Cup!”

Most fans in the Soccer City stadium decided to wear red or orange shirts even if they didn’t hail from either Spain or Netherlands. In general, people interested in soccer — and teenage girls — were supporting Spain, and the rest: Netherlands. Orange shirts were in the majority in the stadium, and the orange feeling was magnified by orange seats and the security wardens’ uniforms.

After a short but colorful closing ceremony, organizers introduced Nelson Mandela. All people in the stadium stood up and started to chant his name. It was the first time during this tournament that any chanting was louder than vuvuzelas.
Mandela, in his 90s, came on the pitch in an electric car wrapped in blankets. But everyone could see his youthful smile; he seemed to be really happy.

And onto the game, which bored many fans — But not the Dutch, who were warming up by running for beers by the dozens here in Soccer City. Spanish fans looked tense – and didn’t wake up once until after Andrés Iniesta’s goal. Until then, I didn’t realize there were so many Spanish flags in the stadium!

After the game, almost all fans stayed in their seats. Next to me, a 60-year-old man in an orange hat was crying, he couldn’t speak — other Oranjes just shook their heads in disbelief.

On the other hand … Spaniards were dancing and singing “Viva España.” I interrupted a young Spanish couple who were kissing (of course).
“It will be the best moment of our lives,” they said.

Roberto lost his voice shouting at the referees, but still can whisper: “Our nation waited so long. I waited all my life. Maybe it will never happen again.”

It was 27th minute of time added to the World Cup final, all fans and most of the players got ready for penalties but not Fernando Torres. Spanish striker, who spent most of the game warming up and giving dramatic signs to his coach to sent him in, finally got his chance in extra time. Torres got a ball run like for life and than pass it to Inesta and small Barcelona midfielder with cold blood placed it into Netherlands net.

3 minutes later Gerrard Pique, huge Spainish defender hold his head in hands like a small boy and cold blooded Iker Casillas, saint Iker started to cry

Spain became World Cup champions for first time in history. They made a history.

But the win didn’t come easy. Both teams started with their favorite 4-2-3-1 system which dominated this world cup and with all first time players. Dutch condense centre of the field so much that even cold Johannesburg wind couldn’t get there.

Spaniards decided to attack using their wings. Very soon could be successful: Ramos and Villa were very close to score. Netherlands answered with the strike of Sneijder.

Nothing much happen in this half apart of festival of yellow cards.

In the second half teams had to make more space and be careful for fouls. It opened space especially for Robben. Bold Dutchman was faster than any South African ostrich and several times exposed slowness of Puyol and Capdevilla.

In 62 minute Robben again lost defenders and stand eye to eye with Casillas. He had so much time that all Spanish fans could say pray to their favorite saint. And their prayes were heard Saint Iker somehow saved Robben shot.

A few minutes later Saint Iker again saved Spain in similar situation. The difference was that frustrated Puyol fouled Robben and deserved red card. Surpisingly Robben, who usually dives more than most of ducks, stand on his feet and lost ball to Casillas.

In return Stekelenburg saved good shot of Fabregas and Villa hit defender when goal was without goalkeeper.

Everything changed when Heitinga got a second yellow card for foul in second part of half time. It looked like Spaniards woke up and beloved that they could win. Then Torres got a ball and you know the rest.

Dutch players were sitting in the middle of the field for long time after the game. They were actually much closer to win yesterday. But the world will remember Spain, the team with fantastic technique skills, perfectly balanced. Zinedine Zidane said after Spain won Euro 2008 that once Spaniards start to win they would never stop. So far it proved right.

Do you want to win the World Cup? Stay away from Premiership!

Do you want to be succesful on international level, do not cross this gate!

Do you want to be succesful on international level, do not cross this gate!

That’s true – if you want to achieve anything in World Cup you should keep your players as far from English Premiership as possible.

English Premiership is the best, the richest football league ever.

But clubs there play so many games on high level, that players never have chance to build form for one event as World Cup. Every game is Premiership is important. When players played 60+ games a year the injuries  are inevitable but never they have time to treat it properly because next important game is in 3 days.  And club’s coaches hate national teams for stealing their players and sending back with injuries, they forget that number of games in the league is the main reason for the injuries.

All English players are playing in Premiership and we have seen how slow they were. Of course those who could make it to the World Cup and didn’t catch a injury. I think it is hang over after such dramatic season.

Now let’s look at the finalists: how many players we have there from Premiership?

Uruguay, small country sensation: none.

Germany fresh, creative, sparkling team: none.

Spain, the best team in the world: Torres, Fabregas and Reina (all on the bench though)

Netherlands: Kuyt, de Jong, Persie and Babbel (Kuyt and de Jong had incredible stamina, Persie doesn’t shine and Babbel is on the bench).

So to summarize: Only 7 for 92 players of the top four world’s teams play in Premiership and only 2 managed to starting line up. It is not so much for the best and the richest football league ever.

PS  France who was the biggest disappointment of the tournament have 6 first team players from Premiership.

Rooney, the best player in teh Premiership was not visible in any from 4 World Cup games.

Should number of games for the clubs be limited in World Cup year?

The final preview: Netherlands - Spain

MatchPredictorESP-NLD_large_72422dba686777da44e19aea625532c5

This is the last game and actually the most interesting one.

Netherlands came through the tournament winning all games. Playing solid football at the back and creative up front. After Robben came back Oranje got back this spark which helps win tie games. The back four (five with keeper) may not be a world class but in front of them operates two vacuum cleaners – De Jong and Van Bommel.

Spain is world class on every position. In 6 world cup games they lost only 2 goals, Netherlands 5. They have fantastic keeper who can save the day even if defenders make mistake. The world’s best midfield and 2 classy attackers – Spain is strong favorite of this game.

It is not sure if Villa will play, because of dead leg injury but his place will be taken by Torres who is arguably even better attacker and has something to prove during this World Cup.

Spain already lost to Switzerland during this tournament so they are not unbeatable but Oranje will have to play the game of their life (like against Brazil) and have a lot of luck.

Both teams have attacking mentality but I think they start very carefully. If nothing surprising will happen the real game will start after second half and closer to end should be more attractive.

Who do you think will win?

Very entertaining game. Germans started with Muller, who was suspended in lost game to Spain, and looked so much better even if played without other key players. Coach Loew decided to give chance all players.

Uruguayans were very ambitious but I have impression that it was the first game when they played not like a team but were focus on individual records. Nevertheless Forlan scored impressive goal and hit the crossbar in last minute of the game, he truly deserved the man of the tournament title.

These are two countries that could win the World Cup for the first time in history. Two countries that love to play attacking football. Two countries that are respected by the way how they run their youth academies. Football is the great winner with Spain and Holland in the World Cup Final. But Holland deserves the cup. Two times before (1974 and 1978) they stood in the final but lost. Spain has never reached the final before. So, to complete the comparison: Spain has to lose and they will. 1-0 by Wesley Sneijder, our Golden boy.

Keeping the ball, passing the ball without creating a lot of chances. That’s the recipe for Spain in this World Cup and it’s working. And it will work in the final as well. Why? Because if you going to beat Spain you have to be a really good defensive team and then have the luck to score the only goal on a fluke. Exactly what Switzerland managed to do in the group stage. But if you are a good offensive team – like Germany or Holland – you don’t have the recipe to beat Spain. As an offensive team you aren’t used to look at the ball instead of having it. That’s why Spain will win the World Cup. The score in the final?  I’d say 1-0.

One word would describe Del Bosque’s Spain: effectiveness. With a lot of very talented players, La Furia Roja have had the capacity to bring all their potential into order in the field. It might no be pretty, but the results are coming one by one and, besides a brief slip with the Swiss team, also their rivals are falling one by one. In my opinion, the only team capable of beating Spain is in fact Holland, but that is providing the Spaniards make any mistakes and if the Dutch are very focus. If not, the thing will naturally pass in favour of a historical Spanish team. Unfortunately for us all, in the end we might have a un-spectacular 1-0 for the red team.

New teams, new style of play is in the World Cup final. Attacking football has already won the tournament, though there are not too many goals. Both Spain and Holland deserved to reach the last and most important game, and it’s not easy to predict the outcome. If Holland let Spain play their style they will have no chance. You can’t win without the ball. Xavi and Co. is the best in keeping and hiding the ball so Dutch must find a way to stop the opponents passing. If Holland can find a goal in a counter-attack the match could be turned upside down and it’s not impossible to score while defence is the weakest part of the Spanish team. But honestly I think Spain will have its first World Cup trophy after a 2-0 victory.

And the winner is… No matter who scores the most goals in Sunday’s match, The Netherlands or Spain, the true winner of the World Cup 2010 is Africa. Let’s not forget how anxious the World was the days before the start of the tournament in South Africa. People from all over the Americas, Asia, Oceania and Europe secretly predicting terrorist attacks, constant harassment by thieves, and massive gang waves taking on the streets. And yet, except for one strike from the stewards and a few minor robberies, everything went well from the beginning, and one can only expect a grand finale in two days. Yes, let’s not forget that every continent has hosted a World Cup at least once in the last 50 years, every continent except Africa. Now, thanks again to South Africans, a people that is used to lead the good way since Mr. Mandela was freed, all Africans can be proud of themselves. Next? The Olympic Games, one would hope.

Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world, Puyol the most aggressive defender in Europe,
Villa the best striker of the tournament and, last but not least, Xavi-Iniesta are a unique pair of genius in the midfield. In few words, Spain is the real galactic team, a mix between Barca and Real. In the opposite, Netherlands have just Sneijder the sniper And, when he’s in a good mood, Robben, the slalom racer. Moreover, Spain is in a increasing shape and Netherlands have a fragile defence. That’s why I believe that La Roja will outclass the Dutch squad and win 2-O. As a biased French man, I’m a bit sad to say Spain, with that success, will equal the 1998-2000 French team, the first who
won World and European Championship in only two years.

Spain or Holland? Holland or Spain? A difficult one to predict, and probably also a difficult one to win. Expect a low scoring game with both sides playing it safe, perhaps a little – or a lot – burdened by the importance of the game. The two teams are very similar in every aspect. Both have near watertight defences, that know how to shut down games when necessary, and both have phenomenal attacking players, that will bring crowds to their feet. Lets hope that for the game on Sunday the attackers will be the ones to shine – and then the names of Iniesta, Xavi and Villa seem to be just that bit more frightening than Robben, van Persie, Schneijder.
Here is the result from the Danish jury: Spain-Holland 1-0.

The final should be, according to statistics, very tie match. Both teams are getting into final match after a row of one goal victories: Spain won with the closest result for four times, Dutch for five times in a row. Also both teams can depend on best shooters of this World Cup, David Villa and Wesley Sneijder both scored fifth times. My personal bet will be on Netherlands, orange heroes will not stop their unbeatable row and they will win also their final match. They are playing more attractive and impressive and I think they will handle Spanish playfulness. And if van Bommel will stay calm and receive no red card, Netherlands will win the cup. Worthily.

There are too many reasons for Spain to win. They have best-in-all-the-world-goalie Casillas at. was-waiting-for-vanderSaar-death Stekelenburg. They have lucky Villa and waiting-for-his chance Llorente at dull gang Kuyt-vanPersie-Huntellaar.
The only chance for Netherlands is Robben (Capdevilla is too unconfident this summer and won’t be capable to stop him). But Arjen should be in fit.
German octopus Paul said Holland would win. But the fact is he always mistakes when predicting finals. And this is another point into account of Spain.
2 years ago the Dutch were playing as champions but lost in 1/4 of Euro. This year they are dull. I’m sure that such a team does not deserve to be called best in the world. And Spain does.

Hi from Quito, Ecuador. We are supporting Holland, the best team in this World Cup. Next Sunday, Robben, Snijder, Van Persie and company will win. From the bottom of our hearts, we send you our best wishes and good luck. Spain is a strong rival, but you have the “orange power”.

Even when Robben has reached his best level, Holland gives the impression that playing at half speed, that’s enough to defeat their rivals. It seems that after numbing the opposing team, the tireless Kuyt makes a gesture to Sneijder as if to say: “Now, we will beat them.” What is the difference with the other versions of Holland? The talent is always there and the scoring ability too. This time, on South Africa 2010, added vigorously to close games. So Holland will be the new world champions.

Spain and Netherlands have gained the name beautiful losers and with that hearts of many real football fans. Each time either team was knocked out most of critics accused them of playing naïve football. Now when both teams play intelligent football and have changed to a winning mentality critics say that they are boring and cynical.
As a football nerd I have to say I really enjoy the Oranje clockwork game and their fantastic four in front but the slow and ageing defense is the weak point of this team. Spain has a perfect balance and simply have better players in each position. They have a great goalie in Saint Iker, still and mean defense, great holding midfielders duo that can also create chances, and so many options in attack. I really think that if Spain would play its second team it would still end up at least in the quarterfinals.
With all my warm feelings about Netherlands the winner will be clear: Spain!

It really is a dream final, of loveable losers and moral World Cup winners of the past. I favour Holland. I believe they put their first hand on the trophy when beating everyone’s favourite Brazil in the quarterfinals in an amazing pick-up against all expectations. If they can keep up their momentum and confidence I believe they can win a very tight final against Spain.
Final score? With Holland’s sometimes-wobbly defence but perky forwards, and a battling Spain where even Barça defenders strike with headers I look forward to a goal fest. 3-2.

By 5 p.m. Sunday one country’s people will flood their streets in celebration. They’ll dance, they’ll sing, they’ll cry and they’ll kiss strangers. The next day, a moment frozen in time for a generation of football fans, will be declared a national holiday and the subsequent booze, oh god, will it flow.
For the other side, those who came up one step too short, it will be nothing but handshakes and heartache. The longest day, in a hard look down the four-year road to Brazil.
Considering the level of play we’ve been treated to this tournament, it’s exciting, heading into the final between Spain and the Netherlands that neither side has yet to find its best game.
Spain, for all its attacking glory, has looked rather impotent. David Villa has risen to the occasion when called upon, but the likes of Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Cesc Fabregas have all failed to find their form. But with a smothering backline, they’ve done just enough to win, railing off a string of 1-0 victories through the elimination rounds.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands, despite the play of Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder — who, for my money have been the best players at this tournament — has looked anything but certain in the final moments of games. They allowed Uruguay a glimmer of hope in extra time in the semi’s and who wasn’t expecting Brazil to tie it in the quarters as the Dutch conceded corner after corner down the stretch. To their credit though, they haven’t stumbled, finding a way to win every game.
Being the resident football fan, I’m often pressed for predictions. But with even the lowliest countries at this tournamebnt showing an ability to touch glory, I’ve mostly left the prognostications up to Paul the Psychic Octopus (he hasn’t been wrong yet.)
The final is different though. The immense pressure of a nation’s hopes brings out the best and worst in players. Think Ronaldo’s masterful performance for Brazil in 2002 and Zinedine Zidane disastrous exit for France in 2006. Results lie in calm minds and consistency.
This weekend, I’ll be betting on the steady hand of Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk to bring about a return to the total football of the 1970s. Come Sunday it will be all Dutch Dreams.

Queen Sofia of Spain were among many celebrities who caused chaos ob Durban airport.

Here we go: Spain and Netherlands will play in the World Cup final. For nerds like me, this is like a football catfight: Angelina vs. Charlize. Two teams I have always adored, the players I like, playing with a positive and offensive mentality I admire.

I was watching Spain’s great victory in a Cape Town restaurant called… “Cappello”. I got a fever after the 30-minute ride from the airport day before. The old Mercedes was near collapse every second, all the windows were broken but it didn’t stop the young driver from speeding 140 Km/h. But not even fever could stop me from watching the semi final. I had to book a table in advance because the night before there were no spaces in any place with beer and a TV set in Cape Town. Most pubs put hand-written signs on the doors: WE ARE FULL!
But during the Spain-Germany game restaurants were almost empty. Most of the regular fans had gone to fan parks (I hate fan parks, you wait for a beer or the toilet for ages and in the end some tall bloke stands in front of you so yiu can see only half of the screen), and the VIPs had flown to Durban.

It is interesting to see how the fan structure changes during the tournament. In the beginning we had a lot of regular fans from each part of the world, coming for the biggest adventure of their lives – seeing three games of their team. Among them were many families and backpackers.

Since the qualification round we’ve faced the invasion of VIPs. Some of them, like Hollywood stars and Russian oligarchs, fight to rent a Maybach Zeppelin (there’s only one such vehicle working in Joburg and it’s driver told me that the Russians are more desperate in booking), but most are driven around like sheep by their hosts, big companies that spend millions to invite their clients for the game.

There are so many VIPs in South Africa that they paralyzed the King Shaka airport in Durban before the Spain – Germany game. The private and charter planes took all parking bays at the airport, blocking scheduled planes with regular fans who had planned their trip months in advance to attend the semi final. Local authorities preferred to make some extra money on private jets rather than making space for regular flights, which I think were already paid. Some regular planes were kept in the air for hours, some had to return and come back after the game rush. Onboard many of these flights fans were raging and even attacked the pilots.

Live football is no longer a game for the masses: it’s a highbrow celebrity event like the Oscars ceremony. At Sunday’s final in Soccer City Stadium  will be few real football fans but many spoiled and bored fat cats who actually don’t even like football.

But who cares – this is the most beautiful event in the world: Spain – Netherlands, football catfight!
